Why bother with office standards?

Who cares about standards or office size, furniture selection or finishes. You’d be surprised! .

When an office relocation requires newly build spaces, Rising Star corporate executives care and they care a lot!

When my rising star client, who seemed to be a very nice man, measured the square footage of his newly built office, (during one of those after hour experiences), he had a hissy fit. Screaming and yelling like nothing most of us see.

Why? He was missing 5 square feet. He perceived that with less square feet, his stature in the company was reduced. He would have the same square feet as his direct report. In this company, it was important and it was noticed.

The contractor? He was trying to reduce the cost of the changes. Reusing an existing wall only 6” away from the new one made sense to this very cost conscious vendor. The company had developed a man who was very supportive of their thrifty budget and because of his success at saving money, he was rewarded with a long term contract . He could save big $ for the company by not having to change the adjoining office’s carpet, ceiling or hvac distribution. A decision the contactor thought helped the company. It would have helped the company but not the rising star.

Everything was rebuilt.

Hint: Ask first?
