The empty new building, we were about to occupy, had an unusual observer. It was the VP of Public Relations. It is move day. We’ve moving 100 people, equipment and boxes. On this Sat. morning, the 18 wheeler moving trucks were circling the building like conestoga wagons looking for a place to park. The movers were ready for the first truck to park holding hand trucks, blankets and skids. The opening bell was about to ring for a very long, sweaty and intense day.
As we were unloading ,“Mr”. Public Relations demanded that his office be the first to be set up. Of course, he hadn’t mentioned this need anytime during the previous three months, during any of our weekly planning sessions or even three days before this move day, nor during our last minute “walk thru” to go over our move check list..
What!!!…. was this guy kidding! Not a chance ! We couldn't find his furniture let alone install it..
I wish I could have tweaked my nose and made it happen. He seemed to be a nice guy during our “before move day” meetings. But as sometimes happens during stress ridden events, an alien emerges. A stranger was standing in front of me screaming. “ I want my office now!” “I have to go out of town” scream Scream SCREAM!!!
Murphy always shows up during these circumstances. His furniture was the last to be removed from the truck. He was quite happy when his furniture was the first to be put on the truck.
By Sunday afternoon, all the furniture, equipment and boxes were in place, ready for occupancy on Monday morning at 8:00 am. Just like we said…“ You’ll be ready for “business as usually” on Monday Morning.”
Move Lesson: First in Last out!
